Product Profile: NuSmile ZR

NuSmile ZR
For Aesthetic Full-coverage Restoration of Primary Teeth

Restoration of primary teeth affected by early childhood caries (ECC) has played an important role in pediatric dentistry for decades. Children who have good oral health are healthier overall, are more likely to do well in school and less likely to miss school due to pain from dental problems. As such, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry guidelines recommend that fullcoverage restorations such as crowns be considered to treat children at high risk of decay and who have multiple surfaces of tooth decay.

Although traditional stainless-steel crowns were the only choice for decades, in 1991, NuSmile pioneered aesthetic restorations with natural-looking and durable pre-veneered NuSmile Signature crowns. Since then, aesthetic restoration of primary teeth has been in strong demand by parents of the many thousands of children affected worldwide. For more than 22 years NuSmile Signature crowns have been the worlds’ most frequently placed aesthetic pediatric crowns with more than three million restorations. While NuSmile Signature pediatric crowns are still immensely popular, NuSmile has developed another choice for pediatric dentists: The NuSmile ZR Zirconia Pediatric Crown.

NuSmile and Zirconia as Biomedical Material

Zirconia has been used for various biomedical applications since the 1960s including, more recently, custom-fabricated adult crowns. Because of its natural physical properties including high flexural strength, extreme fracture resistance, chemical resistance and biocompatibility, zirconia has proven to be an ideal material for the manufacturing of dental crowns. NuSmile has taken advantage of these qualities with the introduction of preformed NuSmile ZR Pediatric crowns.

NuSmile ZR crowns have a monolithic structure forged from high-density, molded zirconia. This patent-pending manufacturing process, along with research-based engineering has produced a quality pediatric crown at an exceptional price.

The NuSmile ZR Zirconia Pediatric Crown System

NuSmile ZR crowns are available in kits or as individual crowns. There are five kits available:
  • Central/Lateral and Universal Incisor
  • Cuspid
  • First Primary Molar
  • Narrow First Primary Molar (ideal for cases with mesial/ distal space loss)
  • Second Primary Molars

Each kit comes in three choices of crown quantities including the Professional Kit (84 crowns), the Starter Kit (40 crowns) and the Evaluation Kit (16 crowns).

In addition, NuSmile has developed NuSmile Try-In Crowns. These crowns are exact match in size and shape to the corresponding NuSmile ZR crown to be placed. They are easily identified by their pink shade and large size ID marking. An important study1 shows that zirconia material free of contaminants from blood and saliva has superior adhesion of cement. NuSmile Try-In Crowns can be used for all trial fitting and preparation refinement steps, allowing the final ZR crown to remain pristine until cementation.

NuSmile's 20+ years of experience in supplying the aesthetic pediatric crown has been invaluable in developing the NuSmile ZR line. Before introducing its complete line of zirconia crowns, NuSmile has taken care to design a crown perfected for the unique requirements of pediatric dentistry.
