Olympic Dentistry

A dual passion for dentistry and athletics landed UK-based dentist Julie Comet a once-in-a-lifetime job on the official 2012 Summer Olympic dental team. Comet owns a holistic dental practice in Kent and her dentistry interests range from complex restorative to cosmetic care. In our brief chat with Comet, she radiates excitement as she talks about her role in the games.

How were you chosen to be part of the official dental team for the 2012 Summer Olympics?
I volunteered last year and had an interview in London, and then I was chosen earlier this year.

Which sporting event will you be in charge of?
Handball.

How many other dentists are on the team?
I’m not sure! At least 12 for the sporting venue and probably the same number at the polyclinic in the Olympic Village.

How long have you been a dentist? What makes you qualified to assist with sports-based dentistry?
I qualified to be a dentist in 1980 and have run a dental practice with my husband for the last 25 years. About three years ago, I attended a specialist sports dentistry course at the Eastman Hospital for 12 days over the course of a year.

Are you a sports fan? What is your favorite Summer Olympic sport to watch?
Yes! Any sport, but especially swimming and any team events.

What are you most looking forward to about being a part of the Summer Olympics?
I’m most looking forward to being part of the biggest sporting event in the UK. The excitement is building and the enthusiasm and anticipation is infectious!
