This course is an abbreviated version of the one presented at the 2009 AAO meeting. Optimizing Your Health gives the participant a science based, easy to follow plan to avoid and/or diminish the risk for most of the diseases associated with living in the twenty-first century. Superfoods and lifestyle choices will be discussed in detail and a common sense approach to controlling inflammation, which has proven to be at least partly responsible for most chronic health problems, will be emphasized. Preservation of hearing, musculoskeletal function, eyesight, and brain function will also be addressed.

Description of Speaker:
Steven G. Pratt, M.D., is a world-renowned authority on the role of nutrition and lifestyle in the prevention of disease and optimization of health. As author of several books, Dr. Pratt teaches that if your "tank" is filled with the right foods, you can increase your chances of living a longer, healthier life.

Dr. Pratt also stresses that while diet and exercise are important, total health is achieved by a network of efforts, where sleep and stress management can have just as much impact on one's daily health and functioning.

Dr. Pratt is currently a senior staff ophthalmologist at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif. He has practiced medicine since 1981. Dr. Pratt received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1975, served his internship specializing in Internal Medicine and did his residency specializing in ophthalmology at the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. He did his ophthalmology fellowship at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary, and he was Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and the Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1981. Dr. Pratt received his board certification by the American Board of Holistic Medicine in 2007.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  • Control your genes through lifestyle and superfood choices
  • Detoxifiy your body from environmental hazards and to "go green without going crazy"
  • Control your waistline and be physically active
  • Control inflammation the "natural" way
  • Keep up your appearances and preserve your sight, hearing, and brain as you "mature"

Dr. Pratt declares that neither he nor any member of his family have a financial arrangement or affiliation with any corporate organization offering financial support or grant monies for this continuing dental education program, nor does he have a financial interest in any commercial product(s) or service(s) he will discuss in the presentation.
