ST. LOUIS—At the upcoming AAPD Annual Meeting in May, long-time dental appliance maker Ohlendorf Appliance Laboratory will introduce a new division focusing on the pediatrics market.

While the company has been fabricating pediatric appliances for several decades, the new division signifies a commitment to broadening Ohlendorf’s reach to dentists nationwide who are dedicated to the care of young patients.

“Pediatric dental practices in the Midwest and parts of the East Coast have relied on us for many years for high-quality custom appliances, and now we want to offer these advantages to a broader market,” said Kevin Ohlendorf, president of the third-generation, family-owned business. “Our goal is to be a partner with dentists in preventing serious oral health issues in children, and our custom appliance solutions do just that.”

Ohlendorf offers a complete line of individually fabricated pediatric appliances to help with space maintenance, habit correction, crossbite, arch development, and crowding. The company also makes custom sports mouth guards.

Ohlendorf says the company has a deep understanding of the many issues specific to pediatric cases.

“We work every day on appliances to help children overcome bad habits that could cause major orthodontic issues later, like thumb-sucking and tongue-thrusting,” he said. “Space management with appliance therapy is also important in avoiding more complicated and costly orthodontic treatment later on. A simple space maintainer early on can save patients time and money when it comes time for braces.”

Educating dental practitioners on the numerous appliance options available can be challenging, Ohlendorf said. “We have a broad range of appliance solutions, so to help dentists better understand the applications of each type of appliance, we’ve created a complete video library. The videos offer a tutorial on dental appliances—terminology, how the different types work to solve specific oral issues, and how to choose the best solution for a particular case.”

Case managers at Ohlendorf work closely with dentists and dental assistants to develop the ideal solution for each patient. Their team understands the importance of expert service, case accuracy and on time delivery.

“We have invested heavily in expert personnel and the latest technology to ensure every case is exactly as prescribed and delivered on time,” Ohlendorf said. “We’re now using 3D modeling and printing technology to fabricate some of our custom appliances and we’re actively researching how this approach could further improve precision and turnaround time. “

Ohlendorf says he looks forward to meeting pediatric dentists and staff at the 2016 AAPD Annual Meeting. “It’s a great opportunity to educate the industry on new solutions and approaches in dental appliance therapy,” he said.
