$59,000 Donated to Dentist for Haiti Mission Trip

Dental Health Products, Inc. supports Friends of Haiti with a donation of $59,300 in dental supplies and equipment to Dave Thompson, DDS for his upcoming mission trip. “I will begin preparation for the October mission in the very near future and I plan to include many of these donated supplies,” states Dr. Thompson. “Our Haitian dental colleagues will be pleased to receive this boost (in donations) to their dental practice.”

Since 2000, Friends of Haiti has provided support to one of the poorest countries in the world by overseeing projects in health, education and economic development in the mountain villages surrounding Thomazeau, Haiti. Volunteers donate their time and cover their own travel  expenses, so that 98% of donations can go directly to providing clean water, school supplies, eye glasses, surgeries, medicine and more to the people of Haiti.

In 2007, Friends of Haiti expanded its health care services to include dentistry. Initially, care consisted of removing abscessed teeth; now it will include more. “Recently, we acquired a portable dental unit and have begun the era of restorative dentistry in the mountain villages,” states Dr. Thompson. “We plan to see an expansion of this area of service with each future mission.” Friends of Haiti makes two mission trips a year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

During the course of his visit, Dr. Thompson will team with 5-6 Haitian dentists to perform dental procedures on approximately 500 patients and preventive care to more than 1,000 school-aged children at six different schools. The school-based preventive program includes a fluoride varnish application, oral hygiene instruction and the distribution of tooth brushes and tooth paste to each student. These expanded services are made possible by the collaboration of Haitian and American dentists and donations from companies like Dental Health Products, Inc.
