May Journal of the California Dental Association Covers Variety of Topics

Posted: May 5, 2014
The May issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association covers a variety of topics, including the art of matching anterior porcelain restorations, preservation of space after premature loss of a second primary molar and the effect of nutritional intake on periodontal disease.

In the article, “The Effect of Nutrition on Periodontal Disease: a Systematic Review,” the authors conducted a search of current literature which reveals only a possible relationship between vitamins and minerals and periodontal disease.

“The authors found that vitamin E, zinc, lycopene and vitamin B complex may have useful adjunct benefits,” said Kerry K. Carney, DDS, editor-in-chief of the Journal. “However, they found inadequate evidence to link the nutritional status of the host to periodontal inflammation and that more randomized controlled trials are needed to explore an association.”

In the article, “Restorative and Periodontal Challenges in Adults with Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa,” the authors present a case of DEB focusing on the obstacles encountered during restorative and periodontal care and recommendations for appropriate treatment.

The author of the article titled “The Art of Matching Anterior Porcelain Restorations: A Clinical Case Report” describes the steps involved in treatment planning, treatment, laboratory communication and materials for the replication of natural polychromicity to restore and match three incisors to the remaining natural teeth.

In another article “Alternative Approach to Management of Early Loss of Second Primary Molar: A Clinical Case Report,” authors describe an innovative design of a functional distal shoe space maintainer that is intended to overcome the disadvantages of conventional non-functional space maintainers.

The author of the article titled “Factors Driving Recent Changes in Dentists’ Incomes” details  the drivers of changes in dentists’ income, including increased educational and practice start-up costs, changes in payment mix, use of auxiliaries, increase in the number of dentists per patient and more.
