LOMA LINDA, Calif., Sept. 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Loma Linda School of Dentistry (LLUSD) and the Center for Research and Education in Technology, Inc. (CRET) celebrated the opening of the Hugh Love Center for Research & Education in Technology (HLCRET) on August 22, a state-of-the-art dental clinic which will provide fourth year students with hands-on training experience in the latest dental technologies while providing access to care to the surrounding community.  This is the first in a series of high technology dental centers that will be opened by CRET in collaboration with academic institutions across the United States.

Founded in 2004, CRET is a forward-looking nonprofit association of dental industry leaders that partners with academic institutions to develop technology education programs for dental students, dental residents, and dental faculty with the aim of promoting knowledge and competency in the industries' latest technologies while providing quality oral care in the surrounding community.

The Hugh Love Center was designed jointly by CRET and LLUSD as a fully functional private dental office located within the dental school.  As a "hands-on laboratory," the Center will garner for dental students critical practice management experience in addition to technology training.

"With private dental practices frequently using more advanced technology than dental schools have access to, graduates are often behind the technology curve when they graduate.  At the same time, access to quality oral care continues to be a serious issue in communities across the country," said Dr. Edward F. Rossomando, CRET Director and Founder and Director of the Biodontics® Program at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.  "CRET's partnership with LLUSD to design, build, and open the Hugh Love Center embodies the power of partnering industry leaders with academia to step up to the plate and solve these issues."

"The Hugh Love Center will enable LLUSD students to improve dental training using the latest equipment in a clinic that simulates the conditions they will have in their future practices, preparing them to 'hit the ground running' upon graduation,"said LLUSD Dean Charles Goodacre.  "We are extremely grateful for the collaboration with CRET that has made this training facility possible."

For two weeks, beginning this fall, fourth-year dental students will treat patients at the Hugh Love Center, named in honor of LLUSD alumnus, Hugh C. Love, DDS (class of 1961), whose unrestricted gift made the new Center possible. The 3,000 sq. ft. Center features six dental operatories and a three-chair open clinic with donated equipment from CRET corporate members, including:
