DENTSPLY Tulsa Dental will launch new BioPure MTAD Antibacterial Root Canal Cleanser at the ADA Annual Session in Orlando, Fla., Oct. 1-3, 2004. This unique, patent-pending irrigant marks a significant advancement in endodontic therapy. BioPure MTAD Cleanser is an antimicrobial solution designed to chemically clean and disinfect the root canal system following endodontic instrumentation. It is proven to remove the bacteria-laden smear layer that obscures dentinal tubules and kill Enterococcus faecalis, the most resistant bacterial strain found in the root canal system.
The main objectives of root canal therapy are to remove bacteria from infected root canals, shape the canals, fill them in three dimensions and prevent re-infection. Current cleaning and shaping methods produce a smear layer of necrotic pulp tissue, dentinal shavings, vascular tissue and bacteria that covers the instrumented canal walls. Because of the smear layer’s potential contamination, experts believe it should be removed to allow disinfection of the entire root canal system.
Studies have shown that today’s standard disinfection products and procedures are inadequate – either because they have limited antimicrobial action, harm dentinal structure or do not remove the smear layer. Irrigants like distilled water and sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) leave the smear layer intact. Another commonly used irrigant, EDTA, removes the smear layer, but erodes the orifices of dentinal tubules in the process and has little or no antibacterial effect. Used after the root canal cleaning and shaping process, BioPure MTAD Cleanser kills the E. faecalis other antibacterial solutions leave behind. It also removes the smear layer more effectively and erodes less dentinal structure than EDTA.

BioPure MTAD Cleanser is comprised of liquid and powder components for mixing at the time of use. The “MTAD” in the product name stands for a mixture of tetracycline isomer (doxycycline), acid (citric acid) and detergent (Tween 80). The doxycycline disinfects the surfaces of the root canals. The citric acid removes inorganic materials from the canals, and the Tween 80 aids the propensity of the solution to diffuse into canal irregularities and dentinal tubules.
