NECN (Comcast): Ohio VA Hospital: Dentist Didn’t Change Gloves

CINCINNATI (AP) — More than 500 patients at a veterans hospital will be offered free HIV screenings to determine if they were infected by a dentist who for 18 years failed to consistently follow the infection control standard of changing latex gloves between patients, Veterans Affairs officials said Tuesday.
The Dayton VA Medical Center is notifying at least 535 patients who saw the dentist for invasive procedures between Jan. 1, 1992, and July 28, 2010, center director Guy Richardson said. The patients will be offered free screenings for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV, and any patients found to be infected will receive free treatment, he said.
