Reality Magazine has awarded its prestigious five-star award to DEXIS® for its DEXIS Digital X-ray system. The five-star award, announced in the February 2004 issue, and included in the 2004 annual volume, represents yet another first for DEXIS, which has been an industry leader in digital radiography innovation for nearly a decade. The award citation highlights many exclusive DEXIS features, including its comfortable PerfectSize™ rounded edge sensor, its robust and computer-powered PCMCIA capture card, the flexibility and configurability of the overall system, and the unique DEXIS ShareStation™, which enables the system to be used as a standalone unit and moved from operatory to operatory, without the need for an external power source.

DEXIS’ patented PerfectSize rounded edge sensor was cited by Reality for its excellent patient comfort, based on positive comments from participants in product evaluation testing. The DEXIS sensor also produced high quality “crisp and detailed” images, according to the citation. Reality praised another DEXIS innovation, the ShareStation, the first self-contained ultraportable digital X-ray system. The ShareStation is the only digital X-ray system that makes use of the latest tablet PC technology in combination with a digital X-ray sensor and does not have to be plugged in during use. The ShareStation can be moved from operatory to operatory with total freedom, bringing a new standard of portability and flexibility to dental practices, while significantly enhancing patient education and treatment acceptance.
The product evaluation team at Reality also praised the flexibility of DEXIS’ digital radiography system, noting that dentists can configure image capture series (e.g. FMX or Bitewings) and mounting preferences to their own specifications. The award also cited DEXIS’ compatibility with other digital systems (e.g., most major Practice Management Software solutions, almost all Digital Panoramic systems, and all intra-oral cameras), and the fact that it can be readily used with all types of Windows-based computers (desktop, laptop, and tablet).
The Reality award is the latest in a succession of DEXIS industry milestones. The surprisingly portable DEXIS ShareStation was introduced in 2003. Specialty versions of DEXIS (General, Endo, and Perio) were introduced in 2002. In 2001, DEXIS was the first company ever to have its digital radiography system receive the American Dental Association “Seal of Acceptance” when it was admitted into the prestigious ADA Acceptance Program. Previously, DEXIS had pioneered the use of portable PCs in digital dental radiography, significantly reducing the necessary investment for dental offices.
Founded in 1986, Reality is a product testing and evaluation company that emerged in response to dentists’ need for an independent information clearinghouse about dental products. In the nearly twenty years since its inception, Reality has grown into an organization with an international 46-member editorial board. The Reality awards are published annually in February.
