What’s the number one problem in dental care?
In a recent survey, 91% of dentists cite poor oral hygiene, plaque, and decalcification. Interestingly, patients agree. In fact, when patients are asked the same question, they skip over the medical terminology and go straight to the bottom line with a one-word description--- cavities.
The problem turns out to be particularly acute in the orthodontic environment. Braces and other fixed appliances make it difficult for patients to manage good oral care. They can’t reach all the nooks and crannies and the result is that bacteria can find plenty of places to grow and colonize. Plaque buildup is harder to control. The worst news comes when patients lose their braces and find their dream of beautiful straight teeth is marred by something they weren’t expecting at all: permanent white spots reflecting deterioration of the enamel during their orthodontic process.
Kenny Gallagher, President, Element 34 Technology wants to change these concerns. With a long history of introducing innovative products to the dental industry, Gallagher’s familiarity with the frustrations led him to ask a simple question, “What if we could find a way to block the bacteria?” He went to Drs. Ted Reid and Julian Spallholz at the Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC) in Lubbock, Texas. The scientists at TTUHSC were responsible for groundbreaking work with selenium---a biologically friendly, natural-occurring element. Their innovative discoveries focused on reducing plaque buildup around implants such a knee joints, hip joints and heart devices. Could the same principles be used to protect teeth?
More than 19 years of university-based research, 7 patents, and FDA approval converged with Gallagher’s simple question. The result is SeLECT Defense™---a proprietary chemistry offering dentists the first anti-bacterial sealant on the market. SeLECT Defense™ bonds to the surface creating a physical barrier to bacteria and then combines microbial inhibiting action to reduce colonization and plaque buildup. The process is transparent to the patient---a natural, safe catalytic reaction that does not leach chemicals or toxins.
Independent laboratory tests report that surfaces coated with SeLECT Defense™ show a 97% reduction in plaque-causing bacteria that contribute to demineralization. The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio further verified the effectiveness of SeLECT Defense™ products to prevent tooth decalcification and white spot lesions by 86%. These amazing results radically improve the options available to orthodontic specialists, pediatric dentists, dental hygienists and other dental professionals.
SeLECT Defense™ is an innovative “green technology” giving dentists the power to offer a safe, natural way for advanced protection and a revolutionary standard of patient care. In addition, SeLECT Defense™ products are easy to use and easy to implement within any dental practice. Without exception, dentists appreciate the enhanced treatment quality and the opportunity to give patients an extra layer of protection in their dental care.
SeLECT Defense™ is exclusively distributed in Texas and Oklahoma through Midwest Dental Equipment & Supply, one of the country’s leading distributors of quality dental brands and services.
