American Academy
of Periodontology Announces 2010 Officers
CHICAGO – (September
14, 2009) – Don Clem, DDS, of Fullerton, California was installed as President
Elect of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Board of Trustees during
its 95th Annual Meeting, held September 12 – 15, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
An AAP member
since 1982, Dr. Clem previously served on the Board of Trustees as Vice
President in 2009 and Secretary/Treasurer during 2008. He is also a Diplomate of
the American Board of Periodontology and a Past President of the California
Society of Periodontists. In addition to the Board of Trustees, Dr. Clem has
served on the Academy’s Planning Committee, Education Committee, and the
Editorial Board of the Journal of Periodontology. He has also acted as
President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, Chairman for
the Task Force on Periodontal Disease Management Guidelines, as well as several
other AAP appointments. Dr. Clem is also a Cobalt Level Donor to the American
Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

successful in this new role. Under his leadership and guidance, I am confident
that the AAP and the field of periodontics will continue to move forward.” said

Dr. Clem
received his dental degree from Loyola University School of Dentistry in Chicago,
Illinois in 1980, and his specialty training in periodontics from the
University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio in 1984. Dr. Clem
maintains a private periodontal practice in Fullerton, California, where he
also resides.
Dr. David L.
Cochran, DDS, PhD, of San Antonio, Texas was installed as Past President of the
American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 95th Annual
Meeting, held September 12 – 15, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
An AAP member
since 1982, Cochran served on the Board of Trustees as President in 2009.
Previously, Dr. Cochran served as President Elect in 2008, Vice President in
2007, and as Secretary/Treasurer in 2006. In addition to his work with the AAP
Board, Dr. Cochran has previously served the Academy as a member of the
Organizing Committee for the AAP Pre-doctoral Periodontal Education Congress
and the Task Force for Distance Learning. He has also chaired the Committee on
Research Science and Therapy, the Continuing Education Oversight Committee and
the Task Force on Distance Learning Options. Dr. Cochran is a Copper Level
donor to the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.
During his
tenure as AAP President in 2009, Dr. Cochran aimed to increase understanding of
the role of inflammation in the progression of periodontal disease and in the
link between periodontal disease and other systemic diseases. To that end, he
helped spearhead a partnership with The American Journal of Cardiology to write
a paper on the link between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. The
resulting consensus paper, “The American Journal of Cardiology and Journal of
Periodontology Editors’ Consensus: Periodontitis and Atherosclerotic
Cardiovascular Disease,” contains clinical recommendations for both
cardiologists and periodontists to use in treating their patients living with,
or at risk for, either disease. Dr. Cochran also oversaw a joint conference
between the AAP and the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO). The program
offered a specialized focus: mutual support of both specialties in the shared
treatment of patients. The conference was well-received by members of both
organizations.

has left an ongoing legacy that is sure to inspire future leadership,” said Dr.
Samuel Low, 2010 AAP President. “I look forward to working with him in the
upcoming year as the AAP moves forward on future endeavors that benefit the
specialty.”
David Cochran
received his dental degree in 1981 and his PhD in biochemistry in 1982, both
from the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his specialty training in
periodontics from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1985 and is a Board
Certified periodontist. Dr. Cochran is currently the Professor and Chair of the
Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at
San Antonio.
Samuel Low, DDS,
MS, of Gainesville, Florida was installed as President of the American Academy
of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 95th Annual Meeting, held
September 12 – 15, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Dr. Low is
Associate Dean and professor of periodontology at the University of Florida
College of Dentistry in Gainesville, Florida. He is also an advisory faculty
member to the Pankey Institute for Advanced Dental Education, a dental school
that focuses on hands-on educational experiences and a highly developed dental
curriculum.
An AAP member
since 1975, Dr. Low served on the Board of Trustees as the Academy’s President
Elect in 2009. Previously he served as Vice President in 2008, and
Secretary/Treasurer in 2007. Dr. Low follows outgoing President Dr. David
Cochran, who will assume the role of Immediate Past President and will support
the Academy in the coming year as a member of the Board of Trustees.
“Dr. Low’s
diverse background will be very valuable during his tenure as President. His
experience within the AAP, as well as with the American Dental Association and
in academia will help Dr. Low successfully lead the Academy throughout the next
year and into the future,” said Dr. David Cochran, 2009 AAP President.

start my year as President of the American Academy of Periodontology,” said Low.
“I am anticipating a very busy and successful year for the Academy, which will
include advancing the science of periodontology, conducting both public and
professional outreach on the importance of periodontal health, and strong
leadership to further the specialty.”
As well as
serving on the AAP’s Planning Committee, Education Committee, and participation
in multiple World Workshops in Periodontics sponsored by the AAP, Dr. Low has
been involved in all levels of organized dentistry. In addition to being a Trustee at the
American Dental Association, Dr. Low is a consultant to the Council on Dental
Practice.
Dr. Low received
his dental degree, specialty training in periodontics, and Masters of Science
in biomedical science from University of Texas Dental Branch at Houston, and
his Masters of Education from University of Florida College of Education.
Nancy Newhouse,
DDS, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, was installed as Secretary/Treasurer of the
American Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 95th Annual
Meeting, held September 12 – 15, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
In addition to
running a private practice in Independence, Missouri, Dr. Newhouse is also an
assistant professor at the University of Missouri - Kansas City School of
Dentistry. She has been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology
since 1989.
A member of the
AAP since 1983, Dr. Newhouse has previously been active in many Committees
including the Executive Committee, American Dental Association (ADA) Liaison
Committee, Task Force on Membership Value, Finance Committee, Planning
Committee, and Awards Committee. She has also served on the Board of Trustees
since 2002.
“Dr. Newhouse
has made great contributions to the AAP, particularly as a member of the Board.
I’m sure she will continue to impact not only the AAP, but also the periodontal
profession as a whole as she takes on this new position,” said Dr. Samuel Low,
2010 AAP President.
Dr. Newhouse
received her dental degree from University of Missouri - Kansas City School of
Dentistry in 1980 and completed her postgraduate work in periodontology at
University of Texas Health Science Center- San Antonio in 1986.
Pamela McClain,
DDS, of Aurora, Colorado was installed as Vice President of the American
Academy of Periodontology Board of Trustees during its 95th Annual Meeting,
held September 12 – 15, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts.
A former dental
hygienist, Dr. McClain maintains a full-time private practice limited to
periodontics in Aurora, Colorado and is a part-time Clinical Assistant
Professor at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry.
An AAP member
since 1985, Dr. McClain previously acted as the Board of Trustees
Secretary/Treasurer during 2009 and has also served on a variety of Academy
committees, including Chairing the Continuing Education Oversight Committee,
Strategic Planning Committee and the Annual Meeting Committee. Dr. McClain has
been a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology since 1992.
“Dr. McClain has
had an outstanding year on the Executive Committee, and in this new position as
Vice President I am sure that she will continue to help guide both the AAP and
periodontal profession toward the future,” said Dr. Samuel Low, 2010 AAP President.

excited to be elected to the position of Vice President of the AAP Board of
Trustees,” said Dr. McClain. “I am honored to be a part of Academy leadership,
and am eager to play a role in shaping the future of periodontics.”
Dr. McClain
received her dental degree from the University of Colorado in 1985, and
completed her postgraduate work in periodontology at the University of
California – San Francisco in 1987.
