Scottsdale, Ariz. - The Arizona Dental Association (AzDA), a leader in state oral health issues, announced Dr. Donald C. Simpson of Sierra Vista as the new President of the Board of Trustees.

The Arizona Dental Association was established in 1909 and is a nonprofit professional organization representing more than 2,500 Arizona licensed dentists – approximately 82 percent of all licensed and practicing dentists in Arizona. An affiliate of the American Dental Association (ADA), AzDA’s goal is to establish the highest standard of care for the public and inspire members in the pursuit of professional excellence through education, leadership, and communications.  The association is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2009.

Dr. Simpson has previously served as Vice President and Treasurer, and most recently served as the President Elect.  He replaces Dr. Regina Cobb (Kingman), who will now serve as the Past President. Dr. Simpson will serve a one-year term. Other Board changes include Dr. Bryan Shanahan (Flagstaff)--Vice President, Dr. Gregg Pafford (Phoenix)--Secretary, Dr. Lisa Lear (Tucson)--Speaker of the House, and Dr. Mark Hughes (Glendale)--President Elect.  Dr. Todd Hellwig (Scottsdale) will continue to serve as treasurer.

“I am honored to be the new President of AzDA and I am optimistic that this is going to be a great year,” said Dr. Simpson. “With the economy playing a big part in how people view their health care needs, my goal is to ensure that the public has access to necessary care and that they receive the best and safest oral health care possible.”

Dr. Simpson has been practicing dentistry in Sierra Vista, Ariz., for more than 30 years.  He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree from the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry.  He is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International.  Dr. Simpson volunteers his time to provide free dental care to underprivileged children through the Arizona Dental Foundation, the association’s charitable arm.  He is also very involved in legislative issues for the association engaging in conversations with state lawmakers and traveling to Washington, D.C.  Considered a history buff, Dr. Simpson often played Doc Holliday, the famous gun-toting outlaw who was also a dentist, in reenactments of the gunfight at the OK Corral.

Dr. Simpson will represent AzDA to government agencies and civic/professional organizations. He will serve on association councils and committees, appoint chairs to those groups, serve as a delegate to the American Dental Association and write columns for the AzDA publication.
