Current Concepts on Temporomandibular Disorders
New Hands-on Course Being Offered at The Dawson Academy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

St. Petersburg, FL – June 23, 2008 – The Dawson Academy is now offering a new hands-on course that teaches its students to differentiate between acute and chronic head and neck pain.

The two-and-a-half day hands-on course entitled Temporomandibular Disorder: Current Concepts will be given by Henry Gremillion, DDS, and will take place Sept. 4-6, 2008 at the University of Florida Seminole Dental Clinic in St. Petersburg, FL.

About the Hands-on Course
Temporomandibular disorders represent a group of musculoskeletal conditions that share common signs and symptoms.  Identification of the specific diagnostic entity involved in each case is essential prior to the development of each specific plan of management.  Diagnosis of TMD may be extremely challenging because of the complexity of sensory innervation of the head and neck, the frequency of referred pain in the region and the uniqueness of each individual’s pain experience.  The first segment of this comprehensive series will present general principles of examination, differential diagnosis and management of patients with TMD.  Special emphasis will be placed on the multi-faceted aspects of a well-structured history taking process.  A sequential format for clinical examination of the temporomandibular joints, head and neck musculature and occlusal function will be described in detail.  Clinical characteristics and management considerations for the various subgroups of intracapsular and extracapsular disorders will be presented.  The course fee is $3,400 per student, and students completing the course will receive a total of 18 continuing education credits.  The lecture falls under The Dawson Academy’s new Dental Medicine Track.

About The Dawson Academy’s Dental Medicine Track
Dr. Peter Dawson has long advocated the need for dentists to recognize their unique role as physicians of the masticatory system.  Dentistry is the only medical specialty with full responsibility for the head and neck, and thus the associated conditions which can develop in this region.  Students pursuing studies in the Dental Medicine Track will expand their ability to diagnose and treat head, neck, and orofacial pain and sleep disorders.  A multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of these problems will be presented.
