Laboratory Manager Rainer Guggenberger inducted into 3M Hall of Fame  

ST. PAUL, Minn. – (Oct. 31, 2007) –3M recently awarded its highest honor to Dr. Rainer Guggenberger, 3M ESPE laboratory manager in Seefeld, Germany, with his induction into The Carlton Society.  Recognized for his unparalleled vision, extraordinary technical creativity, unselfish collaborative leadership and extensive broad-based technical and global business contributions, Guggenberger’s work has led to the successful development of numerous world-class dental materials.
Innovative dental products, such as 3M™ ESPE™ Protemp™ II Temporization Material, 3M™ ESPE™ Rocatec™ Bonding System, and the 3M™ ESPE™ Ketac™ family of glass ionomer materials for tooth filling and cementation showcase Guggenberger’s pioneering research and development.    
Furthermore, Guggenberger developed the groundwork for 3M ESPE’s technology to replace metal crowns with high-strength ceramics, which today has become the well-known Lava™ Precision Solutions.

Founded in 1963, The Carlton Society exists as 3M’s Hall of Fame and acknowledges that growth and diversification originate with people of talent who are encouraged to do their best.  The Carlton Society recognizes scientists making extraordinary contributions to the more than 40 diverse technologies of 3M.  Named for Richard P. Carlton, 3M’s fifth president, elections to the society have been made annually to recognize 3M employees achieving a high standard of originality, dedication and integrity in technical fields and for encouraging junior employees to achieve the same.
In three decades, more than 150 scientists have received Carlton honors for creating technologies and products that have produced significant growth for 3M and even some that have changed the world.  Candidates who have at least five years’ of active employment and exhibit exemplary performance, dedication and integrity are nominated by their colleagues and elected by the Technical Council and Corporate Scientists.
