Dr. Joseph Grieco and 18 others provided dental care for 568 people in two small towns and in Guatemala City from August 2-9, 2003. This number did not include the children that received fluoride treatments. The mission had 14 people from the United States and four Guatemalan dentists. Dr. Grieco was the only American dentist on this mission trip, the rest were support personnel. “When I asked one of the dentists what we needed to ring down with us this year, he said, EVERYTHING! When I asked him to be more specific, he thought for a minute and replied, Fuji!” said Dr. Grieco. “Fuji IX is our favorite restorative material of choice for the children that need dental care.”
Over the past three years, Dr. Grieco and the mission have been helping the dentists in Guatemala become fully outfitted for doing restorations and mission work. This year a special offering taken by Chantilly Bible Church in Virginia, raised over $10,000 for dental equipment. The mission leaves portable dental units and chairs, materials, supplies, and small equipment behind so the Guatemalan dentists can help those in need of dental care.
“The extent of the need is sometimes overwhelming,” said Grieco. “Yet we do the best we can in any given situation. As dentists, we have the abilities that are needed in many different parts of the world. If those needs are left unmet, what have we done with the talents that are entrusted to us?
