Study Shows PuriCore’s Aquatine EC Effective for Root Canal Disinfecting and Cleansing

Results of Study Presented at American Association of Endodontists Meeting

PuriCore (LSE: PURI), the life sciences company focused on the development and commercialization of its novel, safe antimicrobial technology, announced that results of a university study comparing its endodontic cleanser, Aquatine EC (hypochlorous acid), to bleach (sodium hypochlorite) for root canal disinfecting and cleansing were presented at the American Association of Endodontists annual conference in Philadelphia, PA. The researchers found that the Aquatine EC endodontic cleanser was extremely effective at disinfecting tooth root canals contaminated with bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis) when compared to bleach, the gold standard for endodontic disinfection. Furthermore, when used in combination with EDTA, Aquatine EC was also highly effective at removing the smear layer. The independent study, sponsored by PuriCore, was led by Drs Murray and Garcia-Godoy and conducted by Drs Garcia, Kuttler and Namerow at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine.

PuriCore’s proprietary technology produces hypochlorous acid, the same natural antimicrobial produced by the human body to fight pathogens, from the electrolysis of a saline solution. In 2006, PuriCore received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowing it to market its proprietary Aquatine EC endodontic cleanser as a medical device in the US. Aquatine is marketed by PuriCore’s Sterilox Dental division.

Currently, bleach is commonly used as a root canal irrigant; however, it is cytotoxic and can cause severe tissue damage. In contrast, PuriCore’s Aquatine EC solution is biocompatible and considered safe to humans and the environment.
