The Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences (OMDS) at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry is initiating several clinical trials in the areas of oral cancer detection, oral complications associated with cancer treatment, and treatment for oral manifestations of HIV.
Oral cancer detection projects are “A Phase III Multi-Center Study to Evaluate Oratest® in Combination with a Visual Exam to Improve the Detection of Oral Cancer,” principal investigator (PI) Dr. Gary Klasser, Assistant Professor; and “Examination of Patients at Risk of Developing Oral and/or Oropharyngeal Cancer by Standard Visual Examination and ViziLite®Plus with TBlue630,” PI Dr. Joel Epstein, Department Head.
The oral complications clinical trial is “Risk and Outcomes Associated with Mucositis in Subjects Being Treated for Breast, Colorectal, Head and Neck, Non-small Cell Lung, and Ovarian Cancers,” PI Dr. Epstein in collaboration with the College of Medicine
The treatment for oral manifestations of HIV clinical trial is “A Comparative Randomized, Double-Blind, Double-Dummy, Multicenter Study of the Efficacy and Safety of miconazole Lauriad® 50 mg Administered Once a Day and Mycelex® Troches (clotrimazole 10 mg) Administered Five Times a Day in the Treatment of Oropharyngeal Candidiasis in Immunocompromised Patients,” PI Dr. Herve Sroussi, Assistant Professor.
OMDS also has several projects in development for other treatments and collaborations with Johns Hopkins, the Comprehensive Midlife Practice at the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, and the School of Nursing.

OMDS offers consultation and management in its Oral Medicine/Orofacial Pain Center for oral mucosal conditions (including immune, inflammatory conditions and infections), orofacial sensory disturbances (such as burning mouth syndrome, taste and smell disorders, atypical orofacial and tooth pain, as well as sleep-disordered breathing, snoring, and sleep apnea), and orofacial pain and movement disorders (including temporomandibular joint disorders, whiplash-related injuries from motor vehicle accidents, and movement disorders).
