Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo Now Full-Time Faculty Member
Great teaching, great research, and worldwide impact all are components of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry’s Mission Statement.
Helping to fulfill all three is Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo, who now is on board full-time as a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor in Restorative Dentistry.
Dr. Bedran-Russo teaches preclinic and clinic in Restorative Dentistry. “I’m involved in all of the operative and dental materials courses,” she explained. “I co-direct a course in operative with Dr. Courtney Lamb [Clinical Assistant Professor], and I co-direct a course in dental materials with Dr. Jim Drummond [Professor].
“I really enjoy teaching,” she continued. “I find it very rewarding to guide young dental students to be the professionals they will become.”
Dr. Bedran-Russo previously taught at the University of Campinas’ Piracicaba School of Dentistry in Brazil, and at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).
As a researcher, she holds a National Institutes of Health K-08 grant, “Stability of cross-linked dentin and its clinical application,” as well as a Wach Fund Grant from the College, “Long-term effect of cross linkers on dentin bonded interfaces.” She already has nearly 100 journal articles and abstracts in publication worldwide, with more pending.
“I want to expand the research of biomaterials and tooth-restoration interfaces using biomimetics and tissue engineering approaches,” Dr. Bedran-Russo noted. “My work is focused on tooth properties and the improvement or development of new restorative materials.”
Originally from Brazil, Dr. Bedran-Russo earned her DDS at the Aracatuba School of Dentistry in Sao Paulo; her MS in operative dentistry/clinical sciences at Piracicaba; and her PhD in dental material sciences at Piracicaba. She came to the U.S. a little less than five years ago to do her thesis on the “Effects of Thermal and Mechanical Cycling on Restorations Interfaces” at UNC.
Her husband, Dr. Stephen Russo, is a periodontist, and when he got an offer from a practice in downtown Chicago, the couple moved to Illinois.
“I’m very happy and very proud to be part of UIC,” she concluded.
