THE DR. JACK W. GOTTSCHALK DISTINGUISHED LECTURE
The Mouth: A Mirror to Wellness
Speaker: Dr. Harold C. Slavkin
Dr. Slavkin is one of the world’s leading authorities on craniofacial development and genetic birth defects. He is the former director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and is well known as an educator and scientist. Dr. Slavkin is currently Dean and G. Donald and Marian James Montgomery Professor of Dentistry at the University of Southern California School of Dentistry and is a member of the Museum’s Board of Visitors.
Learn how the oral cavity plays an important role in your overall wellness and in the enjoyment of the food and wine you consume. Dr. Slavkin’s lecture will explore a number of influences which are creating intersections between different ways of knowing – physics, chemistry, biology and the social and behavioral sciences. One example of such an intersection is demonstrated where physics, chemistry, biology and nanobioinformatics meet patient healthcare and wellness using saliva as an informative biological fluid.
