Waiting Game

New Touchscreen Quietly Entertains Children and Adults; First System Designed Specifically for Non-Pediatric Locations
Posted: May 12, 2003
Keeping children occupied without disrupting other patients or turning a nice waiting room into a cluttered toy bin has long been a concern of doctors, dentists and psychologists. Best Wave of Scottsdale Arizona today announced the availability of a new touchscreen system that entertains children, and even adults, without clutter, noise, or the risk of inappropriate content. Best Wave provides similar interactive technology for Disney, and Kids ‘R Us. According to Best Wave’s research the biggest problem area in the medical field is not in pediatric offices, but in offices that do not have a play area, and don’t want one. “Patients in pediatric offices expect toy clutter and noise,” according to Best Wave’s President, John Glitsos. “It’s in quiet, well-decorated offices - that have predominately adult patients - where a child’s boredom causes the biggest issue,” he stated.

Providing appropriate waiting room entertainment has become increasingly difficult, as even daytime television programs offend many people. At the same time, non-pediatric doctors and dentists don’t want to make their waiting rooms look messy and disorganized – and their staff does not want to keep putting away and straightening out stacks of magazines, games, puzzles, and toys.

The Waiting Game, from Best Wave of Scottsdale, Ariz., looks classy, fits easily on an end table, and can provide up to an hour of healthy distraction for waiting patients and relatives.

The Waiting Game provides solid entertainment for a broad range of patients without the risk of controversial content. The intuitive technology is instantly usable without requiring any instructions. Games include coloring books, tic-tac-toe, match games and puzzles. Since patients may have a limited amount of time, they don’t want to learn complicated games. The Waiting Game is simple, yet challenging. The games become easier or more difficult depending on age level. Teenagers and even adults find the puzzles challenging, while five-year-olds enjoy coloring with the touch of a finger. Some games such as tic-tac-toe can be played against the computer or against another person. At the higher levels, the computer will beat all but the best players, while at the lowest level, it will let children win most of the time.

“The Waiting Game helps reduce noise and disruption in a waiting room, which makes office personnel more productive and less stressed,” according to Best Wave President, John Glitsos. “The touchscreen means there is nothing to break or lose, and the Waiting Game enhances the decor of the office,” he continued. “This system was adapted from our work for major retailers and theme parks. However it was designed to meet the uniquely challenging characteristics of the waiting room environment.”

The Waiting Game can be purchased, leased or even rented on a month-to-month basis. Lease rates are below $90 per month for a three-year lease and rentals are $245 per month. A portion of the monthly rental may be applied toward the $2,495 purchase price of the system.
