Imaging Sciences' i-CAT Helps Create a New Smile With Teeth-in-an-Hour Procedure
Posted: December 18, 2005
Patient receives his Christmas wish, a full set of dental implants,
thanks to Dr. Thomas J. Balshi of Prosthodontics Intermedica, Imaging
Sciences' i-CAT(tm), and Nobel Biocare's implant surgery system

Fort Washington, Pa.-December 15, 2005-When Josh Robbins was diagnosed
with a debilitating medical disorder, he lost all but two of his teeth,
and was forced to start wearing dentures in his twenties. But now, after
being selected to undergo Nobel Biocare's innovative
Teeth-in-an-Hour(tm) implant procedure, Robbins has a full set of
beautiful, permanent teeth--just in time for Christmas. Dr. Thomas J.
Balshi, DDS, of Prosthodontics Intermedica, Fort Washington, Pa.,
performed the surgery with the help of 3-D Cone Beam dental imaging from
Imaging Sciences' i-CAT(tm) scanner. And Robbins' transformation was
recently featured on ABC's Good Morning America's "All I Want For
Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" segment.

Imaging Sciences' i-CAT(tm) scanner was an integral part of the
pre-treatment, planning, and analysis process for the breakthrough
Teeth-in-an-Hour(tm) surgery-which requires only two doctor's visits,
not the months of repeated visits needed for traditional implants.
Imaging Sciences' i-CAT(tm) produced 3-D images of Robbins' mouth, face,
jaw, bone, nerves, and joints in seconds, which let Dr. Balshi quickly
create the treatment plan necessary for Robbins' implants. Dr. Balshi
also used Procera's implant planning software in conjunction with the
i-CAT(tm)'s images, to virtually position the implants and create the
Nobel drill guides used for implant placement.

"Thanks to this unbelievable implant procedure, the surgical expertise
of Dr. Balshi, and the technology and equipment used to make this entire
surgery possible, I am now able to begin a new chapter in my life
feeling confident with my smile and myself," Robbins says. "My
experience was a total success, and I am so grateful to have been given
this opportunity."

Robbins was chosen to receive the procedure by the Prosthodontics
Intermedica Foundation. Dr. Balshi's internationally respected
Prosthodontics Intermedica practice has performed more
Teeth-in-an-Hour(tm) procedures than anywhere else in the world, and is
a leading teaching center for the procedure.

"Thanks to the i-CAT(tm)'s three-dimensional images, I am able to see
all anatomical structures with a level of detail and accuracy that has
never before been possible," Dr. Balshi says. "These 3-D images, coupled
with Nobel Biocare's system, enable me to perform implant procedures
with a higher level of accuracy, speed, and success. I'm honored to be
able to give patients such a Josh Robbins a new smile, and a new outlook
on life."

Imaging Sciences' i-CAT(tm) is a Cone Beam 3-D Imaging System that
provides the most complete 3-D information on the anatomy of a patient's
mouth, face, and jaw areas, at reduced cost and with considerably less
radiation than traditional Fan Beam Computed Tomography systems. Through
a quick, comfortable, 'open environment scan', the i-CAT(tm) captures
and transfers images of a patient's anatomy to a computer in just
minutes. The images are then displayed on an intuitive 3-D mapping tool
that allows clinicians to format and select 'slices' for viewing.

"It's gratifying to know that the i-CAT(tm)'s anatomically accurate
images are enabling cutting-edge procedures such as
Teeth-in-an-Hour(tm)," says Ed Marandola, President and CEO of Imaging
Sciences. "And an endorsement by the Prosthodontics Intermedica practice
is further evidence that the i-CAT(tm) has become one of the most
popular in-office scanners, by providing the quickest, most accurate,
most cost-effective, and ultimately most convenient 3-D scans available.
Imaging Sciences is proud to help specialists all over the world raise
the bar for implants and other oral procedures."
