Oral Pathologist Dr. David Crowe Joins UIC College of Dentistry
Posted: March 10, 2006
David Crowe DDS, DMSc, has joined the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry as a tenured Professor in the Center for Molecular Biology of Oral Diseases (CMBOD) with a specialty in oral pathology.
Dr. Crowe was a member of the University of Southern California (USC)/Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and co-founder of the head and neck cancer research group at USC. His research interests are focused on the mechanisms of pathogenesis of oral and breast cancers. He seeks to understand how nuclear hormone receptors and their co-activator proteins regulate target gene expression involved in cancer cell proliferation, invasion, and differentiation.
A new research focus in Dr. Crowe's laboratory has been the production of epithelial cells from mouse embryonic stem cells and the isolation and characterization of putative stem cells from adult oral mucosa and oral cancers.  He has been continuously funded over the past 14 years by National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, American Cancer Society, American Institute for Cancer Research, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
Dr. Crowe will further develop the College’s basic and translational research program in oral cancer. He earned his DDS at Ohio State University and his DMSc and Oral Pathology certificate at Harvard University. He has published extensively in high impact cancer journals and is nationally and internationally recognized for his research in oral and breast cancer.
"I was very excited by the emphasis on oral cancer at the UIC College of Dentistry and at the Cancer Center,” Dr. Crowe said. “I met many outstanding researchers and clinicians during my initial visits, and I am very honored in being asked to join this team. I am sure my new colleagues will challenge me with even better ideas, and I hope the expertise in cancer cell biology and oral pathology that I bring to UIC will advance the overall goals of the College of Dentistry and the Medical Center."
