At the 82nd ADEA Annual Session held March 5-9, 2005, in Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Kenneth Kalkwarf, Dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, was elected President-Elect of the Association. After a year as President-Elect, Dean Kalkwarf will become ADEA President for 2006-07.
“I am proud of this organization and the impact that it has had on dental and allied dental education,” said Dean Kalkwarf. “I enthusiastically accept this position and look forward to working with ADEA’s members and strategic partners as we address the challenges of today and the future.”
A member of ADEA since 1975, Dean Kalkwarf has served on the ADEA Council of Deans and the ADA/ADEA Liaison Committee on Surveys and Reports. He was named by ADEA to the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations and the Commission on Dental Accreditation and served as chair of both groups. Among his many ADEA activities, he has represented the Association as a member of the DISC Board of Directors, the Executive Board of the American Association of Dental Examiners, and the American Dental Association Task Force on the Role of Patient-Based Examinations. He has also served on the ADA Future of Dentistry Oversight Committee and as President of the Supreme Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon.
Dean Kalkwarf’s academic career has taken him through faculty positions at three dental schools, where he taught in predoctoral, postdoctoral, dental hygiene, and dental assisting curricula. At the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School, he served as Associate Dean for Advanced Education prior to being named Dean in 1987. Much of his career has focused on licensure as well. He has been a member of a state board of dental examiners, an examiner for a regional board, and a consultant or a member of the board for two different examining agencies.
Also at the 2005 ADEA Annual Session, Dr. Eric J. Hovland, Dean of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, became President, after serving a year as President-Elect. In addition, two new Vice Presidents were elected to three-year terms: Dr. Sheila Koh, Associate Professor, Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch, became Vice President for Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs; and Dr. Sandra Andrieu, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, became Vice President for Sections.
