Comparative Study Highlights Equivalence of Mefakia and Modern Toothbrushes in Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Posted: December 28, 2024
A comparative study at the Holy Bethel Dental Clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, evaluated the oral hygiene status of patients using mefakia (traditional tooth cleaning method) and modern toothbrushes. The study included 246 patients and found that both methods were equally effective in maintaining good oral hygiene. Results showed that 67% of toothbrush users and 65% of mefakia users had good oral hygiene. These findings emphasize the importance of promoting affordable and accessible oral hygiene tools like toothbrushes and fluoridated toothpaste to enhance overall oral health. Traditional methods like mefakia hold cultural significance and can be integrated into dental prevention programs, complementing modern oral care practices. Dental professionals should consider patient preferences and cultural contexts when recommending oral hygiene methods for optimal outcomes.
