Father and son dentists Dan and Gary Keiper recently returned from a 10-day dental clinic trip in Siem Reap, Cambodia with Global Dental Relief (GDR).

Their time in Cambodia consisted of working six days in a “pop-up” clinic in a small village thirty minutes outside of Siem Reap. In addition to treating children they visited temples at the Angkor Wat complex, saw the sunrise at Srah Srang reservoir and went to the see the floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake. But according to the Keipers the very best part of doing this trip were the kids and the ability to be immersed in their daily life.

During the six-day clinic, the team of GDR volunteers provided $266,030 in dental care (US equivalent) to 724 Cambodian children. The children received fluoride varnish treatments and restorations when needed. Each child also received a new toothbrush, and oral hygiene instruction.

Global Dental Relief, established in 2001, currently runs 30 pediatric dental clinics a year in six other locations in addition to Cambodia. Volunteer teams are made up of up to 7 dental professionals and include 5-10 non-dental volunteers who provide essential support in the clinic.
