DENVER—As Veterans Day approaches, Dental Lifeline Network, with the support of the American Dental Association, is asking dental teams to donate care to veterans with special needs.

Launching its Will You See One Vet campaign, the national nonprofit that serves people with disabilities or who are elderly or medically fragile, Dental Lifeline Network is asking dentists to consider donating comprehensive treatment to at least one veteran with special needs each year. Veterans Day is Nov. 11.

Richard, a veteran of the U.S. Navy who served for two tours in Vietnam, exemplifies how volunteering with DLN can make a difference in the lives of veterans. Following his service, Richard suffered severe post-traumatic stress disorder. He had difficulty keeping a job and was left homeless for a period of time. His oral health, as well as his general wellbeing, fell to the wayside until he entered a rehabilitation program that helped him get his life back on track. He receives health care through Veterans Affairs, but could not afford the dental care he needed. Dr. Douglas Watanabe stepped in to donate his time and services to restore Richard’s oral health.

Volunteers will join more than 15,000 other dentists nationwide and 3,500 laboratories. Currently, there are more than 17,000 people on waiting lists for Donated Dental Services (DDS), the network’s flagship program. Since 1985, the DDS program has surpassed $378 million in donated dental care.
