Townies Talk Practice Management Software

Our office is in the process of computerization and we are evaluating several different companies, such as EagleSoft, Dentrix, PracticeWorks and SoftDent. Currently, we are interested in front desk automation; however, we plan on adding a clinical module and a WEB module at a later date. We are looking for the most intuitive software with a good recall system and scheduling system. Any input or comparisons would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I'd encourage you to look very closely at PracticeWorks. I'm currently setting up a practice from scratch in St. Louis and looked into all the major packages. What tipped the scales for me was the number of doctors out here who have made the switch from Dentrix or Softdent to PracticeWorks and are thrilled with their decision. I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival and keeping my fingers crossed!

You will hear many passionate responses back from users of each system claiming that there's is superior, also probably responses from sales reps stating the same thing. Just remember that most of the major players have good solid systems.

Dentists are just like anyone else though, after having made a major purchase like this, you desperately want to believe that yours actually is the "best"! What I have seen as being more important; however, is how well you actually know how to use the system you do purchase. Many offices have very powerful software programs, but don't know how to use them to their full potential. Make sure the entire staff is present for the office training (including the doctor!), and then READ THE MANUAL! Some of the things doctors don't like about their particular systems have actually been addressed and are able to be modified with either extra training or software updates! Hang in there and make a decision YOU are comfortable with and then MASTER the program!

Ditto with PracticeWorks...you can subscribe for 25 bucks a month, which includes support, all upgrades, etc., and get this--it includes a customizable website...check it out!

Best thing to do is get a demo CD from the various vendors. Load it up into your computer and see which one is the most intuitive. I feel it is always good to have a feel for the program before you get the demo from the rep. They always try to wow you with their software. Have a clear understanding of what you want to do with the software. They sometimes will make a big thing about a feature, but it's something you may not use. I found PracticeWorks to be very graphic and was appointment book driven.
