My Dad Worked as a Dentist for 45 Years — His Rules for Increasing Patient Referrals

My Dad Worked as a Dentist for 45 Years. Here Are the Rules He Made Me Learn on Increasing Patient Referrals

Patients don't refer because you asked them to. They refer because you gave them something worth talking about.

Most referral programs are built around a single idea: ask happy patients to bring in their friends, and maybe pay them for it.

My dad's rules were built around something different. Referrals aren't a request. They're a byproduct of an experience that's remarkable enough to talk about, and a system that makes talking about it easy.

1. Never Let Your Patient Experience Look Like Every Other Practice

Humans talk about things when they're different, not when they're the same.

If you walked into a new bank and it looked exactly like every other bank you've seen, nothing changes. But if every visit you were served dessert and handed a giant coin, you'd probably tell everyone about it.

Your practice needs something that makes the patient's experience worth talking about.

2. Give Patients Something They Can Genuinely Give Away

Instead of "Refer a friend and get $50," give your patients something they can hand to someone they care about. For example, a gift card for someone getting married, graduating, celebrating a birthday, or starting a new job, covering a specific service at no cost or at a discount.

Now the patient isn't thinking:

Not "Who can I refer?"
But "Who do I know that could use this?"

Not a referral coupon, but a reason to think of someone who needs it.

3. Never Let the Experience End Without an Object the Patient Can Keep

People forget experiences. They keep objects. Give patients something that carries a story about their visit and naturally starts a conversation:

A doctor's coat with their name on it
A surprise team photo
A dental superhero kit for a child
Even a ridiculous little pen with teeth on the cap

The goal is to make someone ask, "What's that?" Now your patient has a story to tell.

I use Roottine.com to find these.

4. Give Your Most Loyal Patients Something Worth Showing Off

I hand my most loyal patients a sleek black NFC card that also covers incentives at the practice. They simply tap the card on a friend's phone, and it immediately takes that friend to a special landing page.

They don't feel like another patient being asked for referrals. They feel seen, privileged, and acknowledged.

That's what turns loyal patients into loyal advocates for your practice.

5. Use Local Influencers, Not the Big Accounts

Look for small creators whose followers are genuinely engaged, like a mum creator with 5,000 followers. Bring her in and offer a free or discounted service in exchange for recording a vlog of her experience.

Then create an experience worth talking about, something that piques the interest of viewers who already relate to her. Take the video and run a social media ad campaign targeting mums and people who follow creators like her.

Now you're not reaching strangers. You're reaching people who already trust and relate to the person telling the story.

6. Think About Who Your Patients Influence, Not Just Who They Refer

Don't aim for one patient referring one person. Think about who your patients influence in their everyday lives. A mum can influence her husband, kids, parents, friends, and the other mums she talks to every week.

If you create an experience that makes one person want to talk about your practice, that conversation can reach an entire network of people.

Your target should be the patients who already naturally talk to the most people.

Referrals aren't asked for. They're earned by an experience worth talking about.
