Why did Facebook make you download Messenger? And why your practice should care!

Why did Facebook make you download Messenger? And why your practice should care!

Facebook recently required it’s users (me, you, over a billion others) to download their Messenger app if you wanted to continue to chat with your friends. This means you can no longer phone chat with your friends in your Facebook app as you always have, instead you need ANOTHER app. Look at the ratings in the app store, people are pissed! But, Facebook is doing the right thing and the dental world show pay close attention.

See, in dental tech, most dentists use a single software for all their needs. It’s a single piece of software from a single company that handles patient records, scheduling, billing, prescriptions etc.

This isn’t a sustainable model. Put another way, this results in a very poor user (doctor/patient/staff) experience. Each of these tasks require 100% attention. Whenever 1 piece of software tries to do many tasks, it does none of them well and most of them poor. Jack of all trades, master of none sort of thing. This is one of the major reasons why doctors hate their software, 18% want to go back to paper. In the future, each area in the healthcare experience will be broken down and be dominated by very specialized softwares. These companies will focus on doing 1 thing incredibly well. Patients, doctors, and their staff will work with amazing software.

Building software is much like building a house. Currently healthcare tech is like building your entire house with 1 room. Want a lot of natural light AND privacy? Going to be very tough in that one room house. Naturally you would divide the rooms. Now you have 1 room with privacy and the other with natural light. You’re happier. That’s why Facebook is making you download Messenger. They want to blow you away with every experience you have with them. Doctors and their staff should expect the same.
