Townie News Wire: Week of April 20th, 2015

The news of the week includes Carbon 3D, Golden Dental Solutions, Dental USA, Clove Dental, Smile Magic, Selfsense Technologies, and the University of Utah.

1. CARBON3D in Redwood City, California is developing a new 3-D printing technology using “continuous liquid interface production.” The printed object rises from a liquid mixture in a process that is up to 100 times faster than typical additive 3-D printing systems. This venture stage firm, which has received $41 million in funding from private capital firms, also believes the technology is directly applicable to dental applications.

2. GOLDEN DENTAL SOLUTIONS in Roseville, Michigan received an unspecified award from an arbiter of the American Arbitration Association concerning its patent infringement lawsuit against Dental USA of McHenry, Illinois.

3. CLOVE DENTAL in Delhi, India has raised over $17.6 million from dentists in the US and UK to expand its network of dental offices. Clove just opened its 52nd dental clinic in the country and plans to continue its expansion.

4. SMILE MAGIC, a group of dental offices throughout Texas, agreed to pay $4.5 million to settle Medicaid fraud charges. The original lawsuit noted that at least four of the clinics overbilled Medicaid more than $19 million. Now that’s magic.

5. SELFSENSE TECHNOLOGIES LIMITED in Dublin, Ireland is launching the SmartSplint, a new intelligent mouthguard that measures nighttime bruxism. The collected data are sent to an app and to a dentist’s office. The product will only be available through dental offices.

6. Finally, in school news: The University of Utah School of Dentistry opened a new $36 million 62-chair dental clinic. They will grant their first DDS degree in 2017.
