MELVILLE, N.Y.— Henry Schein is accepting applications for the third annual Henry Schein Cares Medal program. The program recognizes organizations from the fields of oral health, animal health, and medicine that demonstrate excellence in expanding access to care for the underserved. The application deadline is midnight Eastern time on October 5.

The Henry Schein Cares Medal is an initiative of Henry Schein Cares, the company's global corporate social responsibility program. Through Henry Schein Cares, the company uses its resources to support health care professionals around the world who provide care for those who would otherwise receive little or no medical attention.

"We are pleased to accept applications for the third annual Henry Schein Cares Medal program so that we may share the stories and celebrate the work of the people and organizations whose commitment to expanding access to care so closely mirrors our own," said Stanley M. Bergman, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Henry Schein. "The positive impact each applicant has on its community should serve as an example for others to emulate, and strengthens Team Schein's resolve to 'help health happen' across the U.S. and around the world."

A panel of expert judges from the medical, philanthropy, social entrepreneurship, and business sectors will select three finalists among applicants from the fields of oral health, animal health, and medicine. In each category, a gold, silver, and bronze medalist will be chosen. Each medalist will receive a cash award, in the following amounts: $15,000 for gold, $10,000 for silver, and $5,000 for bronze, through the support of the Henry Schein Cares Foundation. In addition to the cash awards, each finalist will receive $10,000 worth of product from Henry Schein.

"We at Henry Schein understand that public health is better protected when those who care for underserved and at-risk communities receive the support they need to fulfill their mission," said Jennifer Kim Field, vice president, corporate social responsibility for Henry Schein, and executive director, Henry Schein Cares Foundation. "Henry Schein and the Henry Schein Cares Foundation have long championed care providers who dedicate their time and talent to helping others, and we believe the financial grant and product donation each Henry Schein Cares Medal winner receives will enhance their ability to deliver high-quality medical treatment to the people and animals who need it most."

To be considered a candidate for this award, applicants must be a nonprofit organization or trust that is tax-exempt under IRS Section 501(c)(3) and that is a public charity. The applicant should demonstrate that the program has expanded access to health care for the underserved in a way that is measurable and quantifiable. For the oral health and medical categories, emphasis will be placed on expanding access to health care for children (birth to age 18), although all efforts to expand access to care will be considered.

Programs also should involve an established multi-disciplinary team that demonstrates the expertise needed for a comprehensive solution to expand access to care; demonstrate potential for replication and large-scale impact; and include a business plan or demonstration of financial sustainability.

Finalists will be announced in January 2018, and the medals will be awarded at the relevant national sales meetings in 2018 of Henry Schein's dental, animal health, and medical divisions.
