Kodak Photography Kit 290

Dentists Try New Digital Photography Kit, Report Turnkey Solution, Great Pictures, Ease-of-Use

CHICAGO, October 10--Dentists who evaluated the new digital photography kit from Eastman Kodak Company report that it is easy to use. The Kodak Dental Digital Photography Kit 290, they said, is a complete and integrated solution that includes everything dentists need to quickly take, print, manage and archive beautiful digital photographs of patients, staff and smiles.

"Finally, a turnkey product for digital dental photography," said Thomas K. Hedge, D.D.S., Dental Health Center, West Chester, Ohio. "Until now, dentists have had to assemble digital photography hardware and software from several different sources before they could get started. But with this new kit from Kodak, you get the camera, ring flash, printer, dental imaging software, and anything else you might need, all in one integrated package."

Dr. Hedge has used a number of digital cameras in his practice. He documents all patients and stores their pictures electronically. Any time a patient is considering cosmetic or restorative work, he uses digital images to show the results the patient can expect. "I have an archive of 'before and after' shots showing virtually any cosmetic procedure," he said. "I can just call up an example of a procedure, like a veneer, and show it to the patient immediately. Usually that is all the patient needs."

Occasionally, patients want to see how their smiles will look after cosmetic procedures. Dr. Hedge uses the imagEXPLORER and imagEDITOR software that comes with the Kodak kit, from Dicom Imaging Systems Inc. (OTC BB:DCIM.OB). This software allows him to manage and edit images of the patient's smile showing exactly how the patient will look with whiter, straighter or more even teeth. "Often, when a patient sees that two-foot-wide smile on the computer screen, I don't need to say another word," he said. "They tell me they need the work done."

The Kodak DC290 Zoom Digital Camera that is included in the kit gives "excellent, bright, vivid pictures," said Dr. Hedge. "For dentists today, it is not a question of if you'll get into digital photography, but when," he concluded. "And now the new digital photography kit from Kodak makes the transition that much easier."

Gary Shapiro, D.D.S., has also tried other digital cameras. "The Kodak camera is the best I've seen for both intraoral and extraoral photography," he said. "It's easier to use than any other camera I've tried." Dr. Shapiro noted that you can review images on an LCD screen on the camera back. "You can zoom in on an image you've taken, and scan it horizontally and vertically. So you know if it's the picture you want. If you're not happy, it's easy to delete the image. If you are happy, it's just as easy to print it or load it into your computer."

Dr. Shapiro also noted that the photography kit accessories have been selected to support close-up work. "The lighting, lenses and filters make it the most refined system I've seen for the type of work dentists have to do."

Another kit feature Dr. Shapiro liked was the ability to print directly from the camera—without first loading the pictures onto a computer. "You can get a nice quality print by just inserting the camera memory card in the Picture Maker printer," he said.

Arlene Messer, D.D.S., Rochester, N.Y., also appreciated the ability to print pictures straight from the camera. "You don't have to hook up to a computer," she said. "You just take everything out of the box and you're ready to go."

Dr. Messer uses photography in her practice not only for case presentation but for relationship-building. "We take pictures of all new patients, and keep them in the patient file. It lets us put a face to the name on the schedule. So when the patient comes back, our staff know exactly who the patient is, by name." Previously, Dr. Messer used a 35mm film camera in her practice. "With digital imaging, it will be so much easier," she said. "You know, right away, whether you have a picture that you can use. "I love the kit," she added. "I love the results. It's so easy, my 8-year old daughter was able to use it. And you get beautiful pictures."
