Synopsis:
This course will acquaint the dental practitioner to the legal requirements for a malpractice claim, provide information on specific types of claims and instruct the practitioner on methods to effectively document treatment in an attempt to avoid litigation. In addition, the practitioner will learn methods to identify problem patients early in treatment and protocols to manage these patients. Finally, the practitioner will gain knowledge regarding the NPOB, licensing investigations and how to deal with subpoenas and requests for deposition testimony.

Educational Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
  • Have familiarity with legal elements necessary to support a claim for dental malpractice
  • Recognize specific practice areas and treatment modalities that are more susceptible to litigation
  • Document comprehensively to assist in the prevention of dental malpractice claims
  • Recognize problem patients and institute protocols for management of these patients in a way to avoid claims
  • Identify the circumstances where reporting to the National Practitioners Data Bank is required by Federal Law

Anne Oldenburg
Anne M. Oldenburg is a shareholder in the firm Alholm, Monahan, Klauke, Hay & Oldenburg, a minority owned business. Ms. Oldenburg received her B.A. degree, cum laude, from Ripon College and received her J.D. degree, with distinction, from The John Marshall Law School. She is admitted to the Illinois Bar and the United States District Court for the Northern, Central and Southern Districts of Illinois. She is also admitted to the Federal Trial Bar. She is on the Board of Trustees for Elmhurst Memorial Hospital and Elmhurst Memorial Home Health. She has published and lectured extensively on issues relating to healthcare litigation and risk management issues.

Linda Hay
Linda J. Hay is a shareholder in the firm of Alholm, Monahan, Klauke, Hay & Oldenburg, a minority owned business. Ms. Hay received her B.A. degree from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and her J.D. degree from The John Marshall Law School. She is admitted to the Illinois Bar, the Federal Trial Bar, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Ms. Hay actively defends professional liability cases. Ms. Hay regularly presents seminars on risk and claim management of professional liability cases, and regularly publishes in the field as well.

every area I've received in previous courses was covered in a more precise and informative fashion. This was the best course I've taken in 35 years covering this topic.

Informative course. I haven't taken a risk management course in years so this was a good review of everything. Contrary to the other review I felt both speakers were strong in their presentations.

First speaker was great. Second speaker should re-do her presentation and practice a few more times before recording it. Second speaker may want to go over information again and organize it better.
