MELVILLE, N.Y.—Henry Schein recently joined leaders from the dental industry and the University of Strasbourg Dental School for the installation of a Tree of Peace statue on campus.

The Tree of Peace symbolizes the power of dentistry to bridge cultural and political divides, using the oral health profession as a vehicle for building relationships and understanding throughout the world.

Created by UNESCO Artist of Peace, Hedva Ser, the Tree of Peace at the University of Strasbourg Dental School is the sixth to have been installed at a dental school globally and the first to be installed at a dental school in Europe.

Other Tree of Peace statues can be found at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine; A.T. Still University Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health; Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry; Al-Quds University; and most recently, the Harvard School of Dental Medicine.

More than 200 guests attended the installation at the University of Strasbourg Dental School, including University President Alain Beretz and local elected officials, as well as dental industry leaders and educators from the U.S., U.K., and Israel.

“The University of Strasbourg Dental School has long championed the power of dental education and the oral health industry to break down barriers and advance the cause of globalization, inter-professional relations, and trust,” said Stanley M. Bergman, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Henry Schein. “We are so pleased to know that a Tree of Peace statue now has a prominent place in Europe as we expand the reach of this program.”

The Tree of Peace program was developed by Dr. Allen Finkelstein, chief executive officer of Bedford HealthCare Solutions, and is supported by the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund; Henry Schein Cares, Henry Schein's global corporate social responsibility program; and the Alliance for Oral Health Across Borders. The Alliance was founded by 41 dental schools in 2011 to promote peace and well-being through oral health by building bridges among dental and health professionals around the world, especially in areas of conflict.

“The Tree of Peace creates a physical link that connects the University of Strasbourg Dental School to our fellow dental faculties through the shared values of humanism and hope,” said Professor Corinne Taddéi, Dean, University of Strasbourg Dental School. “We are proud to partner with these venerable institutions of learning so that we may expand our ability to provide the highest quality dental education to the next generation of practitioners. Furthermore, it offers our students a gathering place that connects them to their peers throughout the world. Given the terrible disasters that have injured France and the entire world, our students are proud to have this symbol of peace on our campus.”
