Waiting for a cement to reach gel state for easier
cleanup is often a tedious task in the dental office. It's
inconvenient enough for the dental team, but for patients
it can feel like an eternity. For pediatric patients, a wait of
two to three minutes can sometimes seem all but impossible.
This has long been a challenge with the use of resin-modified
glass ionomer cements. While their fluoride release is a benefit
for young patients, their cure time can pose a problem.
Now, however, with RelyX Luting Plus Resin Modified
Glass Ionomer Cement, 3M ESPE is helping dentists cement
pediatric and PFM crowns easily and effectively. With the addition
of a photoinitator, the cement can now be tack light cured.
Instead of waiting for excess cement to reach a gel state on its
own, dentists can speed up the process by light curing excess
material for about five seconds per surface with a conventional
light-curing device. Once the gel state is reached, excess cement
can be easily dislodged in large sections from the margins with a
suitable instrument. This option allows cleanup to begin almost
immediately, resulting in fewer young patients getting irritable
while waiting in the chair.
Timesaving Delivery Options
In addition to the efficiency benefits of the tack light curing
option, RelyX Luting Plus cement also offers two timesaving
delivery systems. The first is the RelyX Luting Plus Automix
delivery syringe, which has a tip that precisely self-mixes the
cement's two pastes as they are being dispensed to eliminate the
need to load, measure and hand mix. The automix system provides
flexible dosing, easy extrusion and a small-diameter mix tip
that allows users to load the cement directly into the restoration
for easy seating. The cement is also available in the 3M ESPE
Clicker Dispenser, which allows simple paste/paste dispensing.
The Clicker dispenser ensures consistent mix ratios of the two
pastes, and makes the cement easy to mix, load and seat.
Sustained Fluoride Release and High Performance
RelyX Luting Plus cement provides the sustained fluoride
release that makes glass ionomers so attractive for
use with pediatric patients. The cement also has an inherent
ability to provide a molecular bond to tooth structure
without the use of separate etching and bonding techniques.
While some products recommend or require the
use of a separate conditioner on the tooth surface to promote
adhesion, RelyX Luting Plus cement does not need a separate
conditioning step, making its use as straightforward as possible.
Of course, mechanical properties are a key concern for any
cement, and RelyX Luting Plus cement's long history of proven
bond strength provides dentists with great confidence. The
cement also has very low post-operative sensitivity, with one
study finding a rate of just one percent.
Indicated for a Broad Variety of Cases
In addition to its usefulness for pediatric cases like prefabricated
metal provisional crowns, RelyX Luting Plus cement
delivers proven bond strength for a wide range of indications,
including:
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns and bridges
- Metal crowns, inlays and onlays
- All-alumina or all-zirconia strengthened ceramic restorations
- Prefabricated or cast posts
- Orthodontic bands and appliances
- Final cementation of PFMs, metal crowns and all-alumina
or all-zirconia strengthened core ceramic restorations to
implant abutments
This wide range of indications makes the cement useful not
only for pediatric patients, but for the broad variety of work
that dentists do each day. The versatility of RelyX Luting Plus
cement and its new tack light cure option, convenient delivery
systems, and utility in many different types of cases make it a
valuable tool in the operatory - combining a proven track
record with new cutting-edge features.
