Marketing without a plan may be the most expensive mistake I witness practices make.  Whether you are just starting out, or you're 30 years deep into your career, the things your dental practice needs to grow the practice changes over time.  Don't do direct mail, just because you think you need to do direct mail.  Consider these things:

Who am I targeting?
What response do I expect to get from this investment?
How can I track my results?

One of the questions I always ask my practices before we start working together is this: "If the marketing does what it's supposed to do, what does success look like?"  For some practices, they want a certain number of new patients per month, for others they want to hone in on the specialty they have invested so many hours of CE on.  Whatever the goal is, the marketing should help you achieve it.  Good dental marketing begins with the end in mind.

So before you shell out thousands on search engine optimization, or hire a direct mail company to flood your community with postcards, take these 3 steps:

1. Set goals
2. Define your "perfect patient" (or target market, in marketing-speak)
3. Identify the right strategies
4.  Measure your results

Define where you are today, so you know what you are working towards.  Whether you are a marketing professional diving into the dental world, or a business-savvy dentist with a DIY mindset, you can find a much more detailed guide as well as dental marketing tips & tricks for your success on Golden Proportions Marketing's website.
