Thank you for following the M.A.R.S Blog Series on the “Why,” “Who,” “When ” “What” and “How;” Questions that Dental Practices Should Ask About the EPA Amalgam Separator Regulation. It is M.A.R.S' goal to provide Dental Professionals with the right information they need to ensure compliance.

 Our first Blog was the introduction to the Blog Series. You can read Part 1 at the link below;

Our second blog discussed why the US EPA has required amalgam separators to be installed and maintained in American Dental Practices. We will be considering studies completed by other countries who have already required amalgam separators and the difference they make in reducing mercury pollution. Please click the link below to read Part 2 of this 7 Part Blog Series.

Our third blog discussed who will be responsible for regulating Dental Practices. Many think this responsibility belongs to the EPA, the truth is, the EPA Regulation has passed on the responsibility to Control Groups. Read Part 3 of this 7 part Blog Series to learn who will be regulating Dental Practices.

Blog 4 of 7 of this Blog Series discussed "When" a Dental Practice will be required to install an amalgam separator. Currently, there are regions of the United States requiring amalgam separators to be installed right away. There are other regions who have decided to wait until 2020 to make their Best Management Practices. See the blog below to give you an understanding on when your area will roughly be requiring your compliance.

As you may have read in the “Who” portion of our Blog Series, it is the responsibility of the Local Control Groups to create, implement and regulate BMPs for dental practices. Each Local Control Group expectations and standards can be different, as each Local Control Group have different criteria to meet. What is known for sure is the EPA Regulation is the starting point or “bare minimum” requirements set by the EPA. It is entirely up to the Local Control Groups to decide to supersede the EPA Regulation or to follow the EPA set conditions. Many Control Groups find the EPA Regulation to be inadequate, which would mean they would most likely opt to create higher standards in their BMPs. Many of these Control Groups are looking to include the capture of soluble mercury, as mentioned in our “Why” blog of this series, it is a known issue for Water Treatment Plants. Read Part 5 of 7 of this Blog Series to discover "What" are the expectations from Dental Practices;

How to comply with the EPA Amalgam Separator Regulation and your Local Control Groups can be split into two categories. Those Dental Practices who do not have an amalgam separator and those who do have an amalgam separator. For those of you who already have an amalgam separator and you think are already in compliance, please continue reading this blog as 70% of amalgam separators are found to be non-compliant. If you have read the “Who,” “When” and “What” of this Blog Series, you would already know that Local Control Groups will regulate most of the American Dental Practices. These groups have the rights to supersede the EPA Regulation and require higher standards of Dental Practice at any time. This blog will focus on how to choose the right amalgam separator that will guarantee your compliance with your Local Control Group Standards. Part 1 of the "How" to guarantee compliance will be focusing on those Dental Practices who currently do not have an amalgam separator;

The last segment of this Blog Series is a continuation of our ““How” to Guarantee Compliance with the EPA Amalgam Separator Regulation. In our previous blog, we discussed how Dental Practices without amalgam separators could choose the right system to ensure their compliance. This blog is focused on those Dental Practices who already have an amalgam separator, but may not be compliant. There are Dental Practices who are in areas of the United States who already require amalgam separators or decided to be proactive and install an amalgam separator early. These Dental Professionals may think they are compliant when the 2020 deadline hits. The truth is, there have been surveys completed by major cities in North America who have found that 70% of amalgam separators are non-compliant. Please read the last segment of our Blog Series to determine if your current amalgam separator is keeping you compliant;
