How a Celebrity Orthodontist Grew Her Thriving Practice Through Social Media

Dr. Bobbi Peterson started her dental career as a general dentist. She worked for five years in general dentistry before deciding to become an orthodontist. She went back to school to specialize and has owned her own ortho practice in Brooklyn, NY since 2008, All Things Dr. Bobbi.

Lessons From Starting as a General Dentist

Getting her start in general dentistry taught Dr. Bobbi a few very important lessons. She learned the importance of setting herself apart from the competition. Since she was in New York she decided that branding herself as the celebrity orthodontist would be a good idea. In an industry that is heavily driven by referrals from general dentists, this meant that she had to get creative with her marketing.

First things first, Dr. Bobbi decided to brand herself online and invest in SEO strategies and Adwords to get a few celebrity clients. She used a company called Island SEO who she says has been very successful in helping her acquire additional patients. After some investment and time, she was successful at acquiring several celebrity patients (and obviously other patients along the way as well). Some of those include radio and TV personalities, comedians, models and more.

Being Accessible to High End Patients

Unlike most orthodontists, Dr. Bobbi travels to many of her patients in order make things more convenient for them. This is especially appealing to many of her celebrity patients who lead extremely busy lives and appreciate the convenience of someone coming to them.

Using Social Media and the Power of Influencers

Now that Dr. Bobbi had landed a few celebrity clients, she started adding in the second phase of her marketing strategy which was social media. The thing about a lot of celebrities is that they have huge social media followings. If you add up the followers of just a few of the celebrities she has worked on, it is more than 10 million people! Dr. Bobbi just had to do the awesome job that she always does and then she posts pictures of herself with her celebrity patient showing off their beautiful smile and tags them in the photo. This sends a notification to millions of followers and includes the awesome results obtained and Dr. Bobbi's business.

Social media is really about getting the ball rolling. When someone with a big following posts a picture of themselves smiling and tags their orthodontist, their friends and followers see it. That will usually bring in a few people (or a lot) depending on the popularity of the celebrity. Then you do the same thing with the new people who are coming in.

How Dr. Bobbi Would Build Her Practice if She Had to Start Again

Dr. Bobbi said that if she had to start back at square one, she would not do much different than what she already has been doing aside from possibly avoiding Yellow Pages and City Search, since those were not extremely fruitful for her practice. She would start with building her website, SEO and Google Adwords to get the ball rolling and then keep the ball rolling by having her awesome patients spread the word through social media.

Due to the demand of her celebrity patient base, Dr. Bobbi also started adding in a few additional procedures that her patients were wanting. She now does botox, tooth jewelry, orthodontia, Invisalign and teeth whitening. This treatment combination along with her targeted growth strategies has proven very successful for the celebrity orthodontist.
