How One Dentist Used CE to Grow His Practice

I met Dr. Leonard Blanco a few years ago at a CE course here in the States. He is the owner of Leonardo Blanco Dentista Maringa in Brazil. I was amazed that Dr. Blanco would travel so far for a CE course.

As I got to know Dr. Blanco a little better, it was clear that he took pride in bing one of the best trained dentists in his area. He had taken extensive courses in implant placement, orthodonic treatment and root canal treatment. As I gathered his strategy I noticed that it was similar to that of many dentists that I had seen, but also slightly different.

While many dentist add new procedures and fine tune those procedures simply to add money into their practice, Dr. Blanco seemed to have a slightly different philosophy. He attended the best courses he could find because he wanted to be the best option for his current and future patients. He said that obtaining advanced training helped him get excited about talking to patients about treatment, and that knowing that he could provide exceptional treatment gave him confidence when treating his patients.

What I Learned From Dr. Blanco

I have had the opportunity to work with and speak with hundreds of dentists. When I talk to them about CE, I often see dentists making their choices based on price. This makes sense as many people are cost conscious. Dr. Blanco took a different approach. He attended the CE courses that he wanted to regardless of the cost. His philosophy was that the added confidence and procedures would more than make up for the cost of the course.

This is a difficult step for a lot of people to make. You have to trust that you are going to get additional value out of the CE courses you are attending and you have to impliment additional learned skills very quickly.

When I looked at the success that Dr. Blanco had achieved in his practice, this seemed to be working very well for him.

How to Differentiate Your Practice Using CE

CE can be a differentiator, but the value that it adds hinges on communication. When you communicate the value that your CE provides to your patients, they are confident in your work. When you provide good work on the tail of having communicated the value to them, they are extremely happy. Happy patients who know that you have good training and provide good work are patients who are likely to refer their friends and family.

Here are a few of the procedures that Dr. Blanco added to provide value to patients:

  • Dental Implants
  •
  • Root Canals
  •
  • Third Molar Extractions
  •
  • Orthodontic Treatment
  •
  • Veneers

While there are certain cases that are still referred out, obtaining this type of training has allowed Dr. Blanco's practice to become one of the premiere practices in his city. He told me that patients express gratitude for being able to get all of the treatment that they need in one place.
