How a Successful California Dentist Grew His Dental Practice

How a Successful California Dentist Grew His Dental Practice

I recently got to take a peek under the hood of the practice of a phenomenal dentist in San Ramon. Dr. Anthony Nguyen has owned Pro Smile Dental Care for more than 12 years. He has been able to achieve great success in his practice in a very competitive California dental market. He was quite humble about his achievements, but I did some digging to find out just how awesome he is. Here are some achievements that Dr. Nguyen’s practice can boast:

94 five star Yelp reviews
23 five star Google reviews
Dr. Nguyen is also a member six prestigious dental associations and societies

He was kind enough to share some of his secrets to success with us, so without further ado, let’s get to the value.

So you have achieved some great success in your practice growth, can you give me some details about your marketing strategy? What is working for you right now?

Online marketing has been extremely helpful. It costs me nothing other than paying for my website to be made and the SEO to be done on it. I get about 30-40 patients per month coming from online thanks to my website and my SEO company.

Very nice! I had the chance to check out your website and it is beautiful. I feel like this is something that a lot of dentists have a hard time deciding, but what SEO company are you using and how did you choose them?

I was recommended Nerdy Cat SEO by another dentist that was top ranked in his city. I received a full proposal outline and strategy for free before signing with this SEO service. I can email, call or text per my convenience with my concerns or questions regarding our external marketing strategy.

So that is pretty straight forward about what is working. What about things that haven’t worked? Have you had any marketing efforts that didn’t work?

I tried Direct mail marketing for 5 years. It cost about $15k per year. I don't recall the company I used. I probably got about 20-30 patients from it for the 5 years that I used them.

Not exactly the ROI you would hope for with that type of investment. What did you learn from that experience?

I learned that direct mail marketing does not work in my area. Well at least not the efforts that I was putting in. Perhaps people have been inundated by dental mailers in California, but it was not a great investment for us.

Yeah, direct mail marketing seems like something that dentists either love or hate, I’m sure area is a huge factor as well as what is being offered. So you have been in the game for 12 years now, what are some things that you have seen change?

I have seen digital dentistry become more relevant in how we practice. It facilitates work flow, diagnosing with more accuracy, and treatment planning with more predictable results. It also greatly enhances the patient experience. It is extremely important for dentists to keep up with the times to continue to provide the best dentistry available.

That seems to be becoming more and more important, especially when it comes to diagnosing and treating dental issues. If you could give one piece of advice to dentists who are just starting out, or who wanted to start getting more serious about their marketing what would it be?

Work on your online presence. Find a great company to work with and stick with it. Think about where you go when you need a service provider. Chances are high that is online. If you are not being found online, you are missing out on a lot of potential new patient flow.

You heard it here. If you are not working on your online presence and you still need additional new patients, it is time to start working on it! Get good reviews, get a nice optimized website that will convert, and write good content on your blog.
