Improve Your Decision-Making When You Use a Business Coach

In the wildly popular television series “House of Cards”, Kevin Spacey plays the role of president Frank Underwood; a smart, cunning, and ruthless politician. As the story unfolds, President Underwood is faced with many political decisions which can have significant consequences for his political future. It is at these critical junctures that President Underwood turns and speaks directly to the camera as he interprets the question at hand and formulates his response. For a brief moment, the producer allows us access to the inner workings of the president’s mind, and we experience, along with the president, that critical moment between stimulus and action.

In reality, this moment occurs almost instantaneously and yet the final response is processed through a myriad of mental filters including prejudices, self-limiting beliefs, and other perceptual distortions. Identifying these filters and distortions is the beginning of a better decision-making process.

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.
~ Viktor E. Frankl

Coaches work with clients to identify and develop a clear and realistic understanding of the client’s inherent perceptual distortions. They help clients conduct a critical examination of their assumptions and filters that often lead to perceptual change and reframing of deeply held distortions.

Equally beneficial to the decision-making process is the coach’s guidance with integrating the client’s values into the decision-making process. When we align our values with our actions while simultaneously accounting for our inherent perceptual distortions we find that we make better decisions. Decision-making becomes more efficient as we develop these guidelines that dictate the process, and by insisting that our actions serve to further our values we create a degree of clarity that removes self-doubt and hesitation. Ultimately, clients find that they are making decisions with less effort and worry. They feel better about their ability to make appropriate decisions in any given situation, and they gain an enormous amount of self-confidence.

Are you confident with your decision-making ability? Is making decisions difficult for you? Do you worry about the outcome of your decisions? A coach can help with these issues.
