Q: Bradycardia refers to:

(A). Heart rate above 100 beats per minute
(B). Heart rate under 60 beats per minute
(C). Increased heart contraction force
(D). Decreased heart contraction force

  • Bradycardia refers to a slower than normal heart rate (under 60 beats per minute)
  • Tachycardia refers to a faster than normal heart rate (over 100 beats per minute)

The normal heart rate for adults is 60-100 beats per minute. Also, remember that the heart rate for children and infants is faster.

  • Child: 80-120 beats per minute (bpm)
  • Infant: 100-160 beats per minute (bpm)

Tips for memorization: “B” in Bradycardia like “Bus”, and “T” in Tachycardia like “Train”. The train is faster that the bus (usually).

Answer: (B). Heart rate under 60 beats per minute

Let’s review a few more concepts in medical emergencies or medical conditions for the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA). What sounds similar to bradycardia/tachycardia?

  • Bradypnea is a slow respiratory rate, below the normal rate
  • Tachypnea is a rapid respiratory rate, above the normal rate

Same concept with brady vs tachy here. Since we already memorized the trick, we can understand those two concepts so much better! For everything you try to memorize for the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA), make yourself some tips. Use your senses: sound, touch, feeling, image, emotion, or anything that is more than just words.

If you have any questions about the dental hygiene board exams (NBDHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA), please email me at ClaireJ@StudentRDH.com. If I cannot answer it, someone from our team will find the answer for you!
