Staff Changes

Staff Changes

Since taking over Oxford Dental Care eight months ago we have made a lot of changes. One thing that we knew when we took over was that we didn't want the practice to remain stagnant like it had been for the past 15+ years. This meant that changes needed to happen in the way that we treated and communicated with patients and that changes needed to happen in marketing.

Changes in communicating with, and treating patients is by far the more difficult of these two, but is typically not the one that people look at because it requires some discomfort and changing of habits.

We took a good look at the practice and each position and clearly defined what we needed to see happening. We set up expectations for each staff member and then started auditing performance improvements. We figured that if things were not moving the direction that we wanted them to it was either due to unclear expectations on our part, or unwillingness from the staff to change.

After auditing for several weeks knowing that we had clearly set expectations it was clear that some staff members were not willing to change. In this situation it was tempting to just hope that things would change, but we did not want to leave the fate of our company up to hoping. We ultimately had to let one of the practices long time employees go. This was quite scary since she had been with the practice for a long time and we had only owned the practice for 2 months. We were worried about fall out.

We found a great replacement and the patients have responded very positively! The moral of the story is that we need to take action when we know what happens even if we are scared of the outcome.
