Staying Active and Healthy While Practicing Dentistry: Dr. Boers' Story

Dr. Chad Boers graciously agreed to write a blog about how he manages to stay healthy and the benefits of exercise on his practice.  Many thanks to him to take time out of his busy schedule to provide some insight and share his experience on this important topic that he is so passionate about.

"Never underestimate the power of endorphins. That is why I exercise. My morning trail run is the highlight of my day/week/month and has evolved. I also enjoy being the first one in the neighborhood up and out in nature -40 and snow or +80 and sun or rain...I get up and run 5-6 x per week for the past 10+ years and lift upper body weights 1-2/week.

My body is well adapted to the routine, and I no longer get sore running day after day even on rugged, unforgiving terrain. Matter of fact I'm a competitive ultra runner that continues to get stronger in the sport year after year. I only do a couple of marathons each year mainly because of finances and hassle. I can run money free and hassle free right outside my door! It is nice to guage where you stand compared to others by competing, however.

I'm lucky to have good genetics and believe I am physically gifted. I come from a family of small (short) but courageous and athletic people. For example, my (short) uncle Jack Boers was an elite soldier and Green Beret in the US Army in the 50's 60's and 70's and is still alive and healthy today.

I don't remember ever having any pain working as a dentist. I don't ever feel stressed at my job, especially my body. You do the best you can with what you got to work with. If people don't like it, that's their own problem.

As long as I'm above ground and free, I will forever be an ultra runner and, in turn, forever be healthy and able to perform physical work no matter what life throws at me; I have a love for trail running."
