Let me tell you a story about a good friend of mine.
“Sally” (not her real name) is a professional speaker.
In fact, she’s amazing at it and very much in demand. So much so, her fees average $10,000+ for a Keynote plus travel and accommodations, often by private jet.
In December of last year, Sally was scheduled to have periodontal grafting. When she went to the periodontist, they suggested grafting half the mouth one time and the other half of the mouth, the other.
Sally responded saying that she couldn’t afford being away from her speaking schedule any longer then she has to. The periodontist agreed and she had the full mouth periodontal grafting done in December.
Because of surgery and recovery time, in December, Sally had to pass on two $10,000 speaking engagements, both with private jet travel accommodations. (She obviously couldn’t speak thanks to her surgery.)
Now, Sally does about 118 speaking engagements in a year. If you do the math, you’ll get some idea of her value. She speaks for an hour per engagement, but she travels a lot, which requires her time.
So what’s the point?
How does Sally’s story relate to you as a dentist?
Sally makes a high dollar-per-hour income, right?
But it all depends upon her. She has to travel when she speaks, so that’s at least 2 days of travel for one speaking engagement. She’s away from home often, but if something happens to her or her family, she gives up the income.
Is this similar to a dentist?
I think so.
So Sally, just like many dentists, suffers from high production syndrome.
When Sally works, she can produce.
However, when she's not working, can’t work, or maybe doesn't want to work, then there’s no income.
Sally needs to work on a Plan B.
She knows it and she’s doing it.
She’s making the transition because she understands her business can’t be all about her, even though she’s highly skilled and highly competent at what she does.
