AMHERST, N.Y.—Ivoclar Vivadent announces that Adhese Universal, the latest adhesive that works effectively on both wet and dry dentin, has been proven to enhance the ease-of-use and technique tolerance of adhesive procedures.

A recent study completed by Singhal et al. (University of Buffalo, 2014) showed that Adhese Universal consistently achieved high bond strength values, irrespective of the condition of the dentin. The study examined the bond strength on wet, dry, and desiccated dentin for six adhesives from different manufacturers.

High Bond Strength

How wet or dry the dentin should be in order to achieve sufficient bond strength is often very challenging. Total-etch adhesives generally require a “moist bonding” technique in which the adhesive must be applied onto etched dentin that is slightly moist to avoid desiccation. Other etching techniques and adhesives require a dry surface to ensure optimal bonding.

With Adhese Universal, clinicians can utilize one adhesive in wet or dry clinical situations to achieve reliable results. The bond strength of Adhese Universal to dentin remains uncompromised, even after etching with phosphoric acid, or over-drying or over-wetting the dentin surface. This results in predictable high bond strengths independent of the etching and application protocol employed, regardless of whether it is performed on wet or dry dentin.

Ideal Composition & Properties

Adhese Universal combines hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties into one balanced formula. Extremely tolerant towards moisture, Adhese Universal effectively penetrates into the dentin tubules.

The application time ensures that the hydrophilic monomers and water sufficiently re-wet the dentin, allowing the adhesive to infiltrate into the collagen network. A homogenous and uniform layer forms on the surface, even if the adhesive is dispersed with a strong stream of air. Once polymerized, this layer provides optimum sealing of the dentin tubules.
